Inter-Library Loan (ILL) and ILLIAD

As a USM student, you are eligible to use Inter-Library Loan (ILL) to get materials sent for free (rarely is there a charge) from libraries throughout the country and world. Create a FREE inter-library loan account (commonly referred to as an ILLIAD account) from which you can order library materials (books, movies, audiobooks) that are not available from URSUS or MaineCat; or journal articles not available in print or online at your USM campus.

When your request has been filled, the ILL staff will send you an email. When your book, movie, or audiobook arrives, you can pick it up at the Circulation desk at the campus library you chose.  When your journal article has arrived, the ILL staff will send you an email with a link to sign in to your ILLIAD account and access the article electronically.

Once your account is created, you can sign into it from the USM libray homepage. Just click on "My Illiad Account." Should you forget your ILLIAD username or password, contact the ILL staff for assistance: 228.8449 or 780.5343 or illpor@maine.edu.

WorldCat

USM is member of WorldCat which is essentially a "world catalog" of libraries.

After searching available USM resources, students generally turn to WorldCat, when looking for:

  • a specific item (book, movie, score,..) that is not available in URSUS or MaineCat
  • additional information on a difficult topic

From the USM library homepage , under Databases, click on the letter "W". Scroll down and click on WorldCat to access this catalog. (Do not use worldcat.org.)

Overdrive Audiobooks

Overdrive Audio Books
Using your USM ID card, you can download audiobooks for FREE to your computer, mp3 player, or i-pod. Simply create an account using your Library barcode number (red or black number beginning with 25022...).

Audiobooks

Audiobooks (CDs or cassette)
Using the Advanced Search on URSUS, select Material type: "Sound NonMusic" and search for audiobooks. If URSUS and MaineCat do not have what you want, you can check WorldCat and submit a request with your ILLIAD account.

Other Sources of Ebooks/Audiobooks

This is just a sample of the many websites offering ebooks and/or audiobooks: some are free and some have fees.

EBooks

Ebooks are electronic books that can be accessed and read on a computer, selected PDAs/phones, or special reader (e.g. Kindle, Sony Reader). You may need to download software to the device. The printed formats can vary. Free ebooks in many disciplines are available at the USM libraries.

  • Protecting Individual Privacy in the Struggle Against Terrorists
(2008) All U.S. agencies with counterterrorism programs that collect or "mine" personal data -- such as phone records or Web sites visited -- should be required to evaluate the programs' effectiveness, lawfulness, and impacts on privacy. A framework is offered that agencies can use to evaluate such information-based programs, both classified and unclassified. The book urges Congress to re-examine existing privacy law to assess how privacy can be protected in current and future programs and recommends that any individuals harmed by violations of privacy be given a meaningful form of redress.
