    Class 3

This week's class will be devoted to 3 topics:

    1.  Plagiarism: What is it?  Why does it matter?  How can I avoid it?

    2.  The Library of Congress system: who decides where the books go and how can I find them?

    3. Copyright: What is Fair Use and what does it mean to me as a student?

Useful resources about this week's topics:

The LC call number system (Louisiana State University)

    Plagiarism Tutorial (Rutgers University)

Copyright and Fair Use Overview  (Stanford University)

    Due Next Week

Assignment for week of Oct. 20 (to be submitted to pprieto@usm.maine.edu by Tuesday, Oct 27):

    1.  Email me 3 citations from a database other than Academic Search Premier.  Make sure to put your name in the subject line or the comments box so I know who it is from.

    2.  Using Library of Congress Subject Headings, available in Glickman Library, find 2 subject headings that you think may be useful in your research for your final paper.  Write a 1-2 line explanation/justification of how/why you think these headings will be helpful.

    3. Watch A Fair(y) Use Tale (NOT a Disney movie) on youtube.  Really, it's fun!
