Biology of Human Health (4 cr)
This entry phase course in human biology introduces basic concepts of biology (e.g. the natural world) and explores how these concepts relate to human health. It also explores natural scientific and epidemiologic methods of inquiry and applies these methods to complex issues involving the creation and maintenance of human health. Further, the course explores the importance of societal factors in the maintenance of health and explores the interactions of science, culture, and politics. Laboratory exercises will focus on deepening students’ understanding of basic human biology. It is a major goal of this course to explore aspects of human biology that can be quantified and to teach what practices promote health (e.g. nutrition/diet, exercise, blood chemistry, tumor surveillance, and risk avoidance). It is also a major goal of this course to provide student with experiences reading and assessing scientific and popular writings about health-related issues. These approaches will be extended from the personal to the community/global level in LCC 230.
