Timberlake (Fall 2009)
Exploring Careers, Choosing Life Roles (1 cr)
In this middle phase course you will begin the process of relating self knowledge to career and life roles. You will learn how to locate, evaluate, and interpret career information through print media, the Internet, and personal interviews to enable you to identify appropriate career choices. You will also learn about and choose effective decision-making strategies. Emphasis will be placed on reflecting on and making meaning of your college experience, and how the curricular (common core and major course) and co-curricular experiences have shaped your concept of self. You will update and expand upon your e-portfolio.
Course Outcomes: Students will
be able to…
A. Identify assumptions, beliefs, weaknesses,
and circumstances that enhance or create barriers to personal and professional
growth and analyze them, creating a plan to overcome barriers.
B. Evaluate and align information about
career options that match their strengths, interests, and values through
research and informational interviews.
C. Envision and identify career options
beyond the familiar or comfortable that match an awareness of self with work
that will be satisfying and inspirational.
D. Review and re-evaluate self- knowledge
assessments. Update personal autobiographies and write accomplishment
statements on their e-portfolios, with focus on career exploration and integrated
life roles.
E. Describe and evaluate a personal
decision making process for career decision making that they can use to
evaluate and rank preliminary choices. Revise and improve this process as
needed and implement it to select 2 to 3 career possibilities.
F. Articulate the relationship of
possible career choices to the themes of democracy, sustainability, difference,
and justice.
G. Describe how the common core, courses in their program and co-curricular activities have informed their self-concept and career decision
