Center for Sexualities and Gender Diversity: Education, Support, and Advocacy for the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Questioning, Queer, and Allied community at USM.
Diversity at USM: Sponsored by the Jean Byers Sampson Center for Diversity in Maine and endorsed by the President's Council on Diversity.
Gender Studies Student Group: Open to all USM students interested in gender related issues, the GSSO sponsors speakers and events on campus and in the community, participates in local and national gender studies conferences, and represents students on the Women & Gender Studies Council and its committees. The goal of the group is to participate actively in the Women & Gender Studies Program and to generate events, educate the campus on various issues in gender studies, including women's studies, comparative gender studies, and gay/lesbian/bisexual studies.
Gender Violence Initiative: Committed to serving the USM community affected by or need of information about sexual assault, relationship violence, stalking, cyberstalking and sexual harassment. Offering services to USM members affected directly by a crime and to those close to them, including but not limited to counseling, advocacy, and crisis intervention.
Multicultural Student Affairs: Dedicated to increasing the awareness and appreciation of the many diverse cultures and ethnicities at USM through programming, dialogue, and cultural events. It engages Multicultural (African/African American, Latino/a, Asian/Asian American, Native American, and more!) student development and academic support in achievement of career and perceived goals.
Women's Resource Center: Works to empower and transform women's lives through a strong commitment to promote gender equity, provide leadership opportunities, honor diversity, address issues of campus safety, and build a community of support and connection.
Political & Legal Advocates
American Civil Liberties Union GLBT Project: Fights discrimination and
moves public opinion on LGBT rights through the courts, legislatures
and public education. Profiles current cases, news items and provides resources.
Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders: New England’s leading legal rights organization dedicated to ending discrimination based on sexual orientation, HIV status and gender identity and expression.
The Human Rights Campaign (HRC): The largest GLBTQ civil rights organization focusing on political
action and educational outreach. Outlines relevant issues profiling by
state, as well as laws and elections on state and federal levels.
International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC): US-based, NGO, advocating against discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, and HIV status. Compiles and publishes evidence of human rights violations and fact sheets.
International Lesbian and Gay Association (ILGA): International association and network of national and local groups
working for equal rights. Available in four
languages (English, Spanish, French, Portuguese).
Lambda Legal: National organization promoting equal rights through education, legislation, and public policy. Publishes materials on cases, campaigns, and issues.
League of Women Voters of Maine: A nonpartisan political organization encouraging informed and active participation in government, understanding of major political policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.
Maine Women's Lobby: Advocating for women and girls in Maine through education, public policy development on issues of economic security, health care and reproductive rights, civil rights, and freedom from violence.
National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE): Advocates for social justice on a federal level. Provides
collaborative efforts for local advocacy groups and guidance for
inclusively and support of transgender equality.
National Gay and Lesbian Task Force: One of the oldest LGBTQ organizations maintains resources for training activists and supporting state and local campaigns on legislation. The Policy Institute, a premier think tank, provides research and analysis supporting equal rights.
National Organization of Women: The largest, most comprehensive feminist advocacy group in the United States bringing women into full participation in society, sharing equal rights, responsibilities and opportunities with men, while living free from discrimination.

Maine Women's Fund: Awards grants to organizations in Maine promoting lasting social change in Maine.

Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG): Programs, tools, and information to promote support and awareness.
Planned Parenthood Federation of America: Health care services, sex education, and sexual health information to women, men, and young people.
