Instruction

Research indicates that most college students begin and end their "research" with Google. Most instructors expect more of their students. USM Libraries would like to help.

Whether your students need in-class, off-campus or online instruction our staff of professional librarians are eager to provide the kind of instruction you feel is needed. Please, Schedule a Class.

Some options:

  • The standard 50+ minute overview of how to find quality books, articles, and other material on topics you would like to be addressed. Our new online tutorial (under construction) is designed to be taken by students before the classroom instruction occurs, so that we can build on top of those most basic elements.
  • More advanced instruction tailored to your specific needs.
  • The "Embedded Librarian" model where the librarian works with the instructor through the semester to tailor assignments around specific resources with accompanying instruction.
  • Any other model you choose. We would like to partner with you in any way you like.

Please note that assessment follows every class in the form of a quick online survey.

Also, Fall 2009 will offer students the opportunity to take one of two sections of FRS 197, Information Power Unleashed, which is a 1-credit class focused on the basics of information literacy. This very successful class, would make a great add-on to any class, as a lab or in some other form. We would be happy to discuss your ideas.

Please note that the library typically teaches in 518 Glickman, on the Portland campus, and uses a variety of rooms on the other campuses. We are also eager to provide online support to Blackboard classes and classes at other locations. We will work with the instructor to devise the most effective means.

This IT schedule of campus labs may prove helpful.
