Students: Course Guides

EYE classes for 2009-20010 have not, as yet, been determined. When they are, the librarians will begin to create course guides upon request by individual instructors. Those guides will be posted here for online access.

Here is a sample guide from 2008. Guides are individually designed based on class needs.

Faculty: Schedule Instruction

The USM librarians are eager to work with every EYE instructor to provide effective instruction as requested. Let us help your student put the pieces together.

Recommend process for EYE faculty:

1. Direct your students to complete the online Information Literacy Tutorial provided via the tab above. They should complete it in the order of the tabs, which includes a sequence of quizes, videos, and supplemental links. This will cover the basic elements of how to begin their basic research on a given topic use the USM libraries and take approximately 30 minutes to complete. This tutorial is designed to serves as an introduction to ...

2. Schedule live instruction by a librarian by completing this online form. The instruction should follow the tutorial (#1). Please describe your student needs thoroughly as the librarian want to build on top of the basic information provided by the online tutorial.

This sequence of following the basic online instruction with live instruction helps reinforce and expand each student's skill set.

The other option is simply contact one of the librarians in any way you prefer to discuss other ways in which we can work with you to make your class effective. That can include a range of methods, such as designing your class around specfic library resources (very effective); offering tours or "treasure hunts" (less effective); multiple classroom visits by the librarian who will work one-on-one with students...and any other idea you might have. We are very flexible.

Information Literacy?

Information Literacy is a required outcome of all EYE classes at USM so it is crucial that all EYE faculty members design instruction to address this requirement.Working with a librarian is the best way.

"Information literacy is a set of abilities requiring individuals to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information," (ACRL).

Given that most freshmen use Google to meet their academic needs, it is clear that library instruction concerning how to find and use scholarly sources will improve a student's college experience on many levels.
