Thanks to the work of several law school libraries and other institutions around the country, the links below provide a rich resource for basic research in the field of law. The resources provided here are mostly free and serve to supplement or enhance the resources provided within the Portland area by the University of Maine School of Law Library on the University of Southern Maine campus.

USM Libraries maintain a minimal law collection due to the proximity of the law school library. We recommend that you contact the Law School Library for resources and assistance.

American Law Sources On-line

Compilation of links to freely accessible on-line sources of law for the United States and Canada, plus links to sources of commentary and practice aids that are available without charge (or available at a reasonable charge from governmental and nonprofit providers).

Cornell's Legal Information Institute

Provides links to federal, state, foreign and international legal materials, including U.S. Supreme Court cases; U.S. Constitution, U.S. Code, and Code of Federal Regulations; Federal Rules of Evidence, Criminal Procedure and Civil Procedure; state statutes by topic, and a uniform law locator. "Law about..." section provides information and commentary about broad areas of law, with links to online resources. There is a search box for searching the "Law about..." pages. LII also maintains two Topical Libraries, providing in-depth information on American Legal Ethics and Social Security.
